Anti-Tarnish Jewellery: What It Means and How Long It Lasts

Anti-tarnish jewellery has a clear protective coat sealed over the metal so sweat, air and humidity cannot darken it. On gold plated pieces it keeps the gold bright and the brass from turning dark or green, usually for 1 to 3 years with care.
It is one of the most searched phrases in Pakistani jewellery, and one of the most loosely used. Some sellers mean a real sealed coating. Some mean stainless steel that cannot tarnish at all. Some simply mean "it looks shiny today". This guide explains what tarnish actually is, what an anti-tarnish coating does and does not do, how it compares with "tarnish free" and "waterproof" jewellery, and how to make the protection last through a Pakistani summer and monsoon.
What is tarnish?
Tarnish is a thin dark film that forms when metal reacts with oxygen, moisture, sulphur in the air, and the salts and acids in sweat. Pure gold does not tarnish. Copper, brass and silver do. Brass slowly turns brown and then greenish; silver turns yellow and then black.
Gold plated jewellery sits between the two. The 24K gold on the surface will not tarnish, but the layer is thin, measured in fractions of a micron to a few microns. Over time moisture finds its way through tiny pores and worn spots to the brass underneath. That is when you see dark patches, a coppery tint on the edges, or a green mark on your skin.
What does "anti-tarnish" mean?
Anti-tarnish means the piece has been sealed with a clear protective coat after plating. Jewellers use a few kinds: a clear lacquer, an electro-coat applied in a bath, or a thin ceramic-type coat. Whichever is used, the job is the same. It closes the pores in the plating and puts a barrier between the metal and your skin, sweat, perfume and the air.
An anti-tarnish coat does three useful things:
- It slows down darkening of the brass base, so the piece keeps its colour for longer.
- It protects the thin gold layer from rubbing and chemicals, so the gold itself lasts longer.
- It reduces direct contact between skin and base metal, which is why coated pieces are less likely to leave a green mark.
It does not make a piece waterproof, and it does not last forever. The coat wears first where the piece rubs most: the inside of a ring band, the back of a pendant, the hook of an earring and the inner curve of a bangle.

Stainless steel "tarnish free" jewellery is a good everyday choice for simple chains and minimal hoops. It is not how traditional Pakistani designs are made. Diamond-cut locket sets, jurao work, button pati and zircon bangles are cast in brass and plated, because brass takes fine detail and a deep gold colour that steel cannot. How long does anti-tarnish coating last?
There is no single number, because it depends on how often and how the piece is worn. As a practical guide for 24K gold plated jewellery with a good anti-tarnish coat:

What damages the anti-tarnish coat in Pakistan?
- Perfume and attar. Alcohol and oils soften the coat. Spray first, let it dry, then put jewellery on.
- Summer sweat. Salt left to dry on the metal eats into the coat. Wipe pieces with a soft dry cloth after a hot day.
- Monsoon humidity. Damp air in Lahore and especially Karachi's coastal air speed up darkening once the coat is worn. Store pieces dry, in a closed box, with a silica gel sachet.
- Haldi and mehndi. Turmeric and henna stain. Put jewellery on after the haldi or mehndi is done, or wipe it straight away.
- Water, soap and chlorine. Take pieces off for wudu, showers, washing up and swimming.
- Abrasives. Toothpaste, lemon, baking soda and silver dip strip both the coat and the gold. Never use them on plated jewellery.

How to tell if a piece really is anti-tarnish
You cannot see a clear coat in a photo, so ask and check:
- The listing names the base metal and the coating, not just "anti-tarnish" as a keyword.
- The surface has an even, slightly glassy smoothness rather than a raw metal feel.
- The seller explains care and does not claim the piece is waterproof or permanent.

Is anti-tarnish jewellery safe for sensitive skin?
The coat reduces direct contact between skin and base metal, which lowers the chance of irritation, but it lowers the risk rather than removing it.
