Buying Jewelry With Cash on Delivery in Pakistan: What to Check

Cash on delivery means you pay the courier when the parcel reaches you, not the seller when you order. For jewelry in Pakistan it is the safest default for a first purchase, because no money leaves your hands until something physically arrives. It does not, on its own, guarantee that what arrives is what you ordered.

That gap is where almost every bad experience comes from. COD removes the risk of paying for nothing. It does not remove the risk of paying for the wrong thing, and standard COD in Pakistan is pay first, open after.

Six checks before you order close most of that gap, and they take about four minutes.

How does cash on delivery actually work in Pakistan?

The chain is longer than it looks from the buyer's side, and knowing it explains most seller behaviour that otherwise seems odd.

1. You place the order. Nothing is charged.
2. The seller prepares or makes the piece. On handmade jewelry this is usually the longest step.
3. The seller books the parcel with a courier such as TCS, Leopards, M&P, Trax, PostEx or BlueEx and gets a tracking number.
4. The rider delivers it and collects cash from you at the door.
5. The courier remits that cash to the seller, typically one to two weeks later, minus its fee.

Two consequences follow from step five. Sellers carry the cost of every order for weeks before they see the money, and a refused parcel costs them the piece, both freight legs and the courier's charge. That is why serious sellers confirm orders by phone or WhatsApp before dispatch, and it is a good sign rather than a nuisance.

Can you open the parcel before paying?

Usually not, and this is the most common misunderstanding about COD in Pakistan.

Standard courier COD is pay first, then the parcel is yours to open. Riders are collecting on behalf of the courier and generally have no authority to allow inspection. Some sellers do arrange an open-parcel or trial service with their courier, and some riders will wait informally, but neither is guaranteed and neither is the default.

So ask before you order, in writing, and treat the answer as part of the deal. A clear yes or no is fine. A vague answer is the problem.

The one thing you can always do at the door is inspect the outside of the parcel before you hand over money. Check that the seller name on the label matches who you ordered from, that the weight feels plausible, and that the packaging is not torn, resealed or crushed. If any of that is wrong, refuse it and contact the seller. Refusing an obviously damaged parcel is normal and no reasonable seller will object.

Six things to confirm before you place a COD order

Ask on WhatsApp rather than by phone. A written answer you can screenshot is worth more than a verbal one, to both sides.

What COD does not protect you from

Worth being clear about, because the phrase gets used as though it were a guarantee.

• The item not matching the photo. You have paid before you see it. Colour, size and stone tone are the usual gaps.
• Sizing errors. Bangles especially. COD does nothing for you here, which is why sizing is worth settling before ordering.
• Quality claims you cannot verify. Plating thickness, stone type and anti-tarnish coating are all invisible at the door.
• No returns policy. COD is a payment method, not a returns policy. Many Pakistani jewelry sellers accept returns only for damaged or incorrect items, and change of mind is usually not covered. Ask rather than assume.
• Slow refunds. If something is genuinely wrong, you are waiting on the seller, and they are often waiting on the courier's remittance.

What a genuine seller can show you

None of these is conclusive alone. Three or four together is a reasonable basis for trusting a first order.

• A demand for full advance payment on a first order from an account with no history, especially to a personal bank account or wallet number.
• Pressure to decide immediately, or a discount that expires in minutes.
• No fixed address or city anywhere.
• Product photos that appear on several unrelated pages, or watermarks belonging to another brand.
• Refusal to state the total payable before dispatch.
• A phone number that only ever replies by message and never accepts a call.

One thing that is not a warning sign: a partial advance on a high-value, customised or bridal order. Made-to-order pieces tie up real material and labour, and a deposit on a set worth tens of thousands of rupees is standard practice. Judge that by the seller's overall record, not by the deposit alone.

A sensible pattern for most buyers: COD for the first order, then whatever is more convenient once the seller has proved themselves.

At the door: a thirty-second checklist

1. Check the sender name on the label matches the seller you ordered from.
2. Check the amount the rider asks for matches the amount you were quoted.
3. Look at the packaging. Torn, resealed or crushed is a reason to refuse.
4. Keep the receipt or note the tracking number.
5. Open it and check the piece the same day, with the product photo next to it.
6. If something is wrong, photograph it immediately, before wearing it, and message the seller that day.
