Chain Length Guide: 16, 18 or 20 Inch?

For most women in Pakistan, an 18-inch chain is the right choice. It sits just below the collarbone and shows a pendant above a round kameez neckline. Choose 16 inches for a close, choker-like fall, and 20 inches or longer for high necklines.
Chain length is the second question we are asked most about pendant sets, right after bangle size. It changes how a pendant reads more than almost anything else: the same pendant can look delicate, formal or completely hidden depending on where it lands against your outfit.
This guide gives you the standard lengths, where each one sits, how to match a length to Pakistani necklines, and a two-minute way to find your own length at home with a piece of string.
Where does each chain length sit?
Chains are measured end to end, clasp included, in inches. These positions are for an average adult neck of about 13 to 14 inches around. A slimmer neck lets each length fall slightly lower, and a fuller one brings it up.

Remember that the pendant adds its own drop. A pendant that hangs 3 cm below its bail will sit 3 cm lower than the chain position in the table. Heavier pendants also pull the chain into a deeper V, which lowers them by a further centimetre or so.
Which length suits which neckline?
The simplest rule: the pendant should sit either clearly inside the neckline or clearly above it, never right on the edge of the fabric where it catches and flips.

What about the dupatta?
A dupatta worn across both shoulders hides most pendants on an 18 or 20 inch chain. For functions where the dupatta stays on, either choose a 16 inch chain so the pendant sits above it, or a 22 to 24 inch chain and wear the pendant over the dupatta. Pinning the dupatta to one shoulder frees the neckline and any length works.
How to find your own length at home
Two minutes, a piece of string and a ruler.
- Put on the outfit you most often wear with jewelry, or the one you are buying for.
- Drape a piece of string or thread around your neck and let it hang in front of a mirror.
- Move the ends until the lowest point sits exactly where you want the pendant to land. Remember to leave room for the pendant's own drop.
- Pinch the string where the two ends meet at the back of your neck.
- Lay it flat against a ruler or tape and read the length in inches. Round to the nearest standard size: 16, 18, 20, 22 or 24.
If you already own a chain that sits the way you like, measure that instead. Lay it straight on a table, clasp closed, and measure from end to end.
Does height or build change the right length?
Yes, a little. The table above assumes an average build. Use these adjustments:
- Petite or shorter frame: go one size shorter. An 18 inch chain can fall like a 20 inch one.
- Taller frame or longer neck: 18 and 20 inch chains both look proportionate. 16 inches can sit very high.
- Fuller neck or broader shoulders: add 2 inches to the table. A 16 inch chain may sit as a collar.
- Short neck: longer chains that form a V lengthen the line of the neck. 20 inches usually flatters more than 16.
Wearing more than one chain
Layering works when the chains are at least 2 inches apart, so each pendant has its own space. A reliable pairing is 16 and 20 inches, or 18 and 22 inches. Keep the heavier pendant on the longer chain so it settles lower and does not tangle with the lighter one.
